Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you might have sleep apnea.

The main types of sleep apnea are:

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax and block the flow of air into the lungs

Central sleep apnea (CSA), which occurs when the brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing

Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, also known as complex sleep apnea, which happens when someone has OSA — diagnosed with a sleep study — that converts to CSA when receiving therapy for OSA.

The symptoms of obstructive and central sleep apneas overlap, sometimes making it difficult to determine which type you have. The most common symptoms of obstructive and central sleep apneas include:

  • Loud snoring.
    • Episodes in which you stop breathing during sleep — which would be reported by another person.
  • Gasping for air during sleep.
  • Awakening with a dry mouth.
  • Morning headache.
  • Difficulty staying asleep, known as insomnia.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness, known as hypersomnia.
  • Difficulty paying attention while awake.
  • Irritability.
  • Loud snoring can indicate a potentially serious problem, but not everyone who has sleep apnea snores.

Hearing Implants

Hearing implants are a revolutionary technology that can help people with severe hearing loss to regain their sense of sound. These devices are surgically implanted into the ear and work by directly stimulating the auditory nerve. They are an excellent option for those who do not benefit from traditional hearing aids.

  • Cochlear Implants: Cochlear implants are the most common type of hearing implant. They consist of an external processor that picks up sound and sends it to an internal receiver that is surgically implanted under the skin. The receiver then sends electrical signals directly to the auditory nerve.
  • Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA): BAHA devices are another type of hearing implant that work by transmitting sound through bone conduction. They are often used for people with conductive hearing loss or single-sided deafness.

Allergies

Allergies are a common condition that can cause a wide range of symptoms, from mild itching and sneezing to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Dr. Gladson Guddappa Uchil is an experienced allergist who can help diagnose and treat allergies using a variety of methods.

  • Skin Prick Testing: This is a simple and painless test that involves placing a small amount of allergen on the skin and then pricking it with a needle. If you are allergic, you will develop a small bump or hive at the site of the test.
  • Blood Tests: Blood tests can be used to measure the levels of certain antibodies in your blood. These antibodies are produced when you are exposed to an allergen.

Latest Advancements

Dr. Gladson Guddappa Uchil stays up-to-date with the latest advancements in hearing implant and allergy technology. Some of the newest developments in these fields include:

  • Advanced Cochlear Implants: New cochlear implants are being developed that can provide even better sound quality and more natural hearing. These devices use advanced algorithms to process sound and can even adapt to changing listening environments.
  • Immunotherapy for Allergies: Immunotherapy, or allergy shots, is a treatment that can help desensitize your immune system to allergens over time. New advances in this field are making allergy shots even more effective and convenient.
